A sectional is a seating arrangement made from multiple sections; a modular sofa uses individual units to build an arrangement. The terms can overlap: a modular system can form a sectional, but the label “sectional” does not by itself mean every piece can be rearranged however you want.
The useful question is which configuration fits your room and how you use it. Before choosing from Maadson’s sofas and sectionals, compare the complete footprint, the pieces included and the route each piece must travel into your home.
Modular sofa, sectional or standard sofa?
| Format | What to check | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard sofa | One main frame and its delivery dimensions | You want a defined seating area without selecting several modules |
| Sectional configuration | Every section, the corner or chaise position and the assembled footprint | You have a clear layout for connected seating |
| Modular system | Compatible units, connection method and permitted arrangements | You want to choose an arrangement from separately specified pieces |
Use these as comparison categories, then read the actual listing. Removable cushions do not make a sofa modular, and two pieces that look similar are not necessarily compatible.
Start with how the room needs to work
Write down the activities the seating must support: watching a screen, talking across the room, stretching out or leaving an open route to a balcony. Decide where people enter and where they need to pass through. A long chaise can be appealing until it crosses the room’s main walking path.
Map the proposed arrangement with painter’s tape. Include the full outside dimensions, not just the seat cushions. Open nearby doors and storage, pull out any dining chairs that share the room and check access to windows or radiators. Place an existing chair where a module would sit so you can judge the view from the seat.
For a small room, compare a straight sofa with a separate lounge chair as well as an L-shaped option. The arrangement with the most seats on paper may leave less usable space between activities.
Read width, depth and seat depth separately
Overall depth measures the whole piece from front to back. Seat depth describes the sitting area. They answer different questions: one tells you how much floor space the sofa uses, while the other helps you compare how you may sit.
As a simple example, a hypothetical sofa that is 40 inches deep would leave 50 inches within a 90-inch-deep seating zone before adding a coffee table, circulation space or any other furniture. That is a subtraction exercise, not a fit guarantee. The room still needs a practical layout with the other pieces in place.
Look at arm thickness, back shape and any curved or projecting sections. If the listing gives several module dimensions but no assembled plan for your chosen arrangement, ask for the complete layout dimensions before buying.
Confirm which side the chaise or return occupies
Write “left when I am facing the sofa” or “left when I am sitting on it” in your notes. Retailers can use orientation labels differently, so match your intended layout to the listing’s diagram and terminology rather than relying on “left” alone.
For a modular design, confirm whether the proposed layout is supported. Ask which pieces have arms, which are armless and whether the connection system lets the units work in the arrangement you want. Check whether an exposed side has the finish you expect if a unit will stand alone.
Make sure the price is for the configuration you need
A product page may offer both complete arrangements and individual components. The smallest displayed price can refer to one module rather than the group shown in the main photograph.
For example, the Grappolo modular seating listing includes configuration choices such as a 3-piece set, a 4-piece L set and individual modules. Read the selected option and its included pieces together. An individual module is not interchangeable with a complete-set purchase.
Before checkout, make a short list: configuration name, module types, quantities, finish or fabric and anything shown that is sold separately. Check the cart against that list. If a future expansion matters to you, ask about current compatibility and availability; do not assume matching modules will always remain available.
Measure the delivery route for each separate piece
A sofa can fit the living room and still fail to reach it. Compare the dimensions of the largest delivered unit or package with the usable openings on the route. Include elevator doors, the elevator interior, stair landings, ceiling height at turns and the space on both sides of the apartment door.
Do not assume legs, arms or backs can be removed unless the product information confirms it. Ask for packaged dimensions when they are not listed. For a tight route, send the measurements and photographs to the team before ordering; a single doorway-width comparison cannot resolve every turn.
Choose with a complete order checklist
- The selected configuration has a measured place in the room.
- Doors, walking routes and storage remain usable.
- The orientation matches the listing’s diagram.
- The cart includes the intended modules and quantities.
- The largest delivered piece has a workable access route.
- Availability, delivery service and the current return terms have been checked.
